So You Bought a SAN! Congratulations! Now What?

So you’re ready to connect your SQL environment and your SharePoint application because you believed all of those SAN vendors about how much faster it will be in a SAN!

Well, not so fast.

SQL Performance

You need to understand the characteristics of your SQL environment. A couple of questions to consider: Is it a sequential I/O or a random I/O application? Do you have enough spindles with the correct RAID levels to support the required I/O?

Dell EqualLogic offers the best technology to help deal with this. Block level virtualization means that data is stripped across all available spindles in the arrays and this technology allows for great scalability without affecting downtime to any hosts connecting to the SAN.

Sequential I/O and Random I/O have different performance characteristics and block level virtualization enables the provisioning of storage to your SQL servers in a way that is easy to deal with.

Keep in mind that because this technology is purely iSCSI, connecting to this SAN is a less expensive proposition compared to the costs associated with fibre channel, plus you do not need a college degree to manage your own SAN.
