The term “virtualization” has grown beyond simple server technologies and has evolved into a technology platform that covers systems, databases, and applications. This article will provide a general update on the major players in the industry and summarize their approach to virtualization going forward.

VMware: The clear market leader in server virtualization, VMWare has long set the standards and pace of change. Last week GreenPages attended the annual VMWorld event, where the Company made several significant announcements:

ESX Server 3i – This major initiative involves partnerships with Dell, HP, NEC, Fujitsu, Siemens, and IBM. The VMWare server will be stored on the flash memory cards of the vendors’ servers. This is a major leap; new VMWare servers will be able to boot the virtualization software automatically. The OS itself has been slimmed down from 2 GB to 32 MB. The first units configured with the VM flash will begin shipping Q4.

Virtual Desktop Manager – VMWare also released a new suite to help companies replace their traditional PCs with thin clients. The system connects the clients to a cluster of VMware servers running virtual machines that emulate the performance of a traditional PC. The system assigns a VM to each worker without the need for Citrix or Terminal Server sessions.

Acquisition of Dunes Technologies – VMWare also announced its acquisition of Dunes, a provider of process automation software for the VMWare environment. This is the first acquisition since VMWare’s IPO in August. The move enhances the Company’s product line and provides a better suite of lifecycle and deployment options for larger scale deployments.
